The Whole Musician Directory
Are you a teacher or professor who cares deeply about providing your students with skills and deep insights into the complex and rapidly changing field of music?

Are you a graduate of the ground-breaking Institute for Music Leadership at Eastman? A student at the innovative Entrepreneurship Center for Music at the University of Colorado—Boulder? An alum of The New England Conservatory who makes use of their fine career development center? Are you familiar with the wide-ranging services of the career center at the Berklee College of Music or are you participating in the Camerata program at the University of Arizona? Does your institution have great professional development offerings? Let’s hear your thoughts and experiences.

The Elision Institute is compiling a directory of innovative training courses, programs, workshops and other opportunities that prepare musicians to enter and sustain viable, fulfilling, and authentic music careers at high school, collegiate, and professional levels. Send us a message with information about your program and how we can reach you for more details.

         ... Thank you!

Share Your Thoughts
We welcome your general comments regarding career development, authentic vocation, and performance wellness. Teachers, performers, composers, students, critics, music therapists, conductors, administrators, music business pros, agents, editors, instrument makers, professors, theorists, musicologists, ethnomusicologists, jazzers, collaborative pianists—whatever hat you’re wearing today—please share your stories, concerns, plans, frustrations, surprises, and new ventures.

Here are a few topics to get the ball rolling (and perhaps open a can of worms or two):
  • What are your thoughts on liberal arts versus conservatory training?
  • Should additional coursework focused on career development be added to already demanding music curricula, are there other effective ways of addressing challenges of career preparation, or is it just sink or swim for graduates?
  • What are the ethical issues for institutions who prepare students for a field that has few actual “jobs” to offer?
  • How can teachers help students be mentally, emotionally and physically healthy in music school or should these concerns even be addressed by music teachers who are not often trained to deal with these aspects of their students’ lives?
  • Are there questions you’d like to post or consider?

         ... Thank you!

We will post selected stories and questions at a future date. Thanks!
